• Mise en place

I was looking through my notes and found: Meez en plaws. Now it’s the official name of this comic project. It’s my chicken scratch spelling of:

Mise en place (French pronunciation: [mi zɑ̃ ˈplas]) is a French culinary phrase which means “putting in place” or “gather”. It refers to the setup required before cooking, and is often used in professional kitchens to refer to organizing and arranging the ingredients (e.g., cuts of meat, relishes, sauces, par-cooked items, spices, freshly chopped vegetables, and other components) that a cook will require for the menu items that are expected to be prepared during a shift.

  • audiobooks narrated by the author

A small joy in life especially combined with Libby. If you aren’t seeking a newer trendy book, it’s pretty likely you can find what you’re looking for there.

Lists are pretty easy to find. I’m currently listening to Mindy Kaling.

  • why wordpress

Some friends have asked me what I ended up rolling for my blog. The answer is: I bought into a WordPress hosted plan.

    Why I did that:

    • I wanted to spend most of my time posting to the blog instead of maintaining it. That’s also why I decided against self hosted, for now.
    • After working in tech for a decade plus, so many trendy platforms go to waste. WordPress is likely to stay.
    • Just because I can design and code, doesn’t mean I want to every single time.
  • shot girl fall

In light of becoming even more allergic to life itself, it’s time to do shots! Luckily, surgery means I’ve met my deductible.

For the next 10 weeks, I’ll be spending 90 minutes x2 per week at the doctor’s office. Which seems like a great opportunity to put forward a scoped creative project that won’t break my back.

Inspired by *Not-Inktober and work from friends, I’ll be trying to illustrate 4 panel comics with this format:

    • Setting
    • Build up
    • Punch line
    • Conclusion

    * Apparently, the Inktober creator is problematic.

  • Refocus

For the past few weeks, I’ve tried really hard to become someone I’m not. Instead of wishing I were someone else, I had a moment while watching a video about the Bagel Ladder* that it’s about re-focusing not re-inventing.

    1. Health. Set-up for a better season. If you can’t breathe, you can’t sleep. Everything else then falls apart. Things like exercise, nutrition, and meditation are possible only after good sleep.
    2. Structure. Daily routines must be seen as a bonus not a requirement. Evolving from my current self to an ideal self is a process.
    3. Home. Continue to reduce to essentials. Clearing countertops and virtual space means more learning. It’ll be easier to slow down this way too.
    4. Finances. Better understanding means smarter decisions. And then the ability to choose what makes sense next easily.
    5. Inspiration. Honing in on making things which only give energy. Remember how much the work supporting a “small” project can amount to. Remember to give yourself ‘High Value Treats’ that remind you that life is worth living. Like doge!

    * The Polyvagal Ladder. It was captioned funny in a TikTok video.

  • allergens

I’ve done the skin test 9 years apart. Both times, we’ve confirmed that many things outside and inside aggravate me. Since immunotherapy takes years to see through a regimen, I’ve put it off. Who knows where I’ll go or want to be?

When redoing my life more recently, I’ve thought about what changes I could make to enhance my Time, Money, & Energy.

It’s all non-starters if you can’t breathe comfortably. In the past, this has been predictable enough. Just don’t plan to get anything done in the spring! Buy a big HEPA filter! Know what to avoid!

But it burns Energy to always be on guard. And you’ll miss things when you’re pushing. As I have this past trip doing an art show. I failed to assess a cut flower bouquet and brought it back to where I was staying. By the end of a week, 4x bennys couldn’t bring me down to baseline.

It’s difficult to know what to prioritize in life. And it’s way easier to see if all in retrospect.

This isn’t a lesson to get allergy shots sooner or at all. It’s more of an exercise to remind myself that what’s done is done. And that it wasn’t all bad: In exchange for not doing my allergy shots sooner, I got to see more of the world!

But now is a great time to stay still. And get this done to be able to move more freely. (Agency)

  • Instax

Sketches from a project that has yet to come to fruition.

  • Intrigue & Agency

A realization of what motivates me.

    Intrigue.

Things need to be interesting! It doesn’t have to be a drastic shift. Little experiments embedded in bigger goals work just fine, in fact, that works great! (So many exclamation points!)

    Agency.

This only works when there’s freedom. The freedom to run the little experiments within. Having Time, Money, and Energy to pursue what I can. This discovery will help guide me through the next decade.

  • Hello World

As with every project, we start off with a hello world! post. It means everything and nothing, much like life itself.
